Chapter 18 Neural Control And Coordination



Maintaining homeostasis in our bodies requires the coordinated functioning of various organs and organ systems. **Coordination** is the process where two or more organs interact and complement each other's functions. For example, during physical exercise, increased muscular activity requires more oxygen, leading to increased respiration rate, heart rate, and blood flow. When exercise stops, these activities return to normal. This coordinated response involves several organs and systems.

The **neural system** and the **endocrine system** jointly coordinate and integrate all body activities, ensuring they function in a synchronised fashion. The neural system provides a rapid, point-to-point network for quick coordination, while the endocrine system provides slower, chemical integration through hormones.

This chapter focuses on the human neural system, its structure, the functional unit (neuron), and the mechanisms of neural coordination, including impulse generation, conduction, and transmission across synapses.

Neural System

The **neural system** is composed of highly specialized cells called **neurons**. Neurons are capable of detecting, receiving, and transmitting different kinds of stimuli. This forms an organised network for rapid communication and control.

The complexity of the neural organisation varies across the animal kingdom:



Human Neural System

The human neural system is divided into two main parts:

  1. **Central Neural System (CNS):** Includes the **brain** and the **spinal cord**. This is the site for information processing, control, and decision-making.
  2. **Peripheral Neural System (PNS):** Comprises all the nerves of the body that are associated with the CNS. Nerves are bundles of nerve fibres (axons).

Nerve fibres of the PNS are of two types based on the direction of impulse transmission relative to the CNS:

The PNS is further divided based on the type of target tissue:

**Visceral nervous system** is part of the PNS that comprises nerves, fibres, ganglia, and plexuses that transmit impulses between the CNS and the viscera (internal organs).



Neuron As Structural And Functional Unit Of Neural System

The **neuron** (nerve cell) is the structural and functional unit of the neural system. It is a microscopic cell specialized for receiving, transmitting, and processing information in the form of electrical and chemical signals (nerve impulses).

A neuron is composed of three major parts:

  1. **Cell body (Soma):** Contains the cytoplasm with typical cell organelles (nucleus, ER, Golgi, mitochondria) and granular bodies called **Nissl's granules** (involved in protein synthesis).
  2. **Dendrites:** Short fibres branching repeatedly from the cell body. They also contain Nissl's granules. Dendrites transmit impulses **towards the cell body** (receive signals from other neurons or receptors).
  3. **Axon:** A long fibre extending from the cell body. The distal end is branched. Each branch terminates as a bulblike structure called a **synaptic knob**, which contains **synaptic vesicles** filled with **neurotransmitters** (chemicals for transmitting signals across synapses). The axon transmits nerve impulses **away from the cell body** towards a synapse or a neuromuscular junction.

Generation And Conduction Of Nerve Impulse

Neurons are **excitable cells** because their membranes are in a **polarised state**. This polarisation is due to a difference in the electrical potential across the membrane, maintained by differing concentrations of ions (Na$^+$, K$^+$, Cl$^-$, negatively charged proteins) on the inside and outside of the cell.

In a **resting neuron** (not conducting an impulse):

These gradients are maintained by the **sodium-potassium pump** using ATP energy, transporting 3 Na$^+$ outwards for every 2 K$^+$ inwards. This results in the outer surface having a positive charge and the inner surface a negative charge (polarised membrane). The electrical potential difference across the resting membrane is the **resting potential** (typically around -70 mV inside relative to outside).

When a **stimulus** is applied at a site on the polarised membrane (e.g., site A), it increases the membrane's permeability to Na$^+$. This causes a rapid influx of Na$^+$ ions into the cell. The influx of positive charge reverses the polarity at that site: the outer surface becomes negative, and the inner surface becomes positive. This reversal of polarity is called **depolarisation**, and the electrical potential difference across the membrane at this point is the **action potential** or **nerve impulse**.

The action potential generated at site A triggers a current flow on the inner surface towards the adjacent polarised site (site B) and a current flow on the outer surface in the opposite direction. This flow causes depolarisation at site B, generating a new action potential there. The process repeats along the axon, conducting the impulse as a wave of depolarisation. Immediately after, the membrane at the excited site becomes permeable to K$^+$, which diffuses outwards, restoring the resting potential (repolarisation). This allows the fibre to be ready for a new stimulation.

Answer:

(a) **Polarisation of the membrane of a nerve fibre:** This refers to the state of the nerve membrane when it is at rest (not conducting an impulse). In the polarised state, the outer surface of the membrane is positively charged, and the inner surface is negatively charged. This is maintained by a concentration gradient of ions across the membrane (higher K$^+$ and negative proteins inside, higher Na$^+$ outside) and the action of the sodium-potassium pump, which actively transports 3 Na$^+$ out for 2 K$^+$ in, creating an electrical potential difference (resting potential) across the membrane.

(b) **Depolarisation of the membrane of a nerve fibre:** This refers to the reversal of polarity across the nerve membrane that occurs when a stimulus is applied. Upon stimulation, the membrane at the site becomes transiently permeable to Na$^+$ ions. Rapid influx of Na$^+$ into the cell causes the inner surface to become positively charged and the outer surface to become negatively charged. This reversal of polarity constitutes the action potential or nerve impulse at that specific site.

Question 7. Explain the role of Na+ in the generation of action potential.

Answer:

Sodium ions (Na$^+$) play a critical role in the generation of the action potential (nerve impulse). In the resting state, the nerve membrane is polarized, with a higher concentration of Na$^+$ outside the cell and a lower concentration inside. The membrane is also relatively impermeable to Na$^+$ at rest. When a stimulus reaches a threshold level, it causes specific voltage-gated sodium channels in the membrane to open. This dramatically increases the permeability of the membrane to Na$^+$. Due to the electrochemical gradient, Na$^+$ ions rapidly rush into the cell. This influx of positive charge causes the inside of the membrane to become positive relative to the outside, reversing the polarity (depolarisation). This rapid influx of Na$^+$ and subsequent depolarisation is the defining event of the action potential.


Transmission Of Impulses (Synaptic Transmission)

A nerve impulse is transmitted from one neuron to another or to an effector cell (muscle, gland) at specialized junctions called **synapses**. A synapse is formed by the membranes of the presynaptic neuron (sending the signal) and the postsynaptic neuron or cell (receiving the signal), separated by a synaptic cleft (a fluid-filled gap) or in close proximity.

There are two types of synapses:

Mechanism of transmission at a chemical synapse:

  1. An impulse (action potential) arrives at the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron.
  2. This stimulates synaptic vesicles (containing neurotransmitters) to move towards the presynaptic membrane.
  3. Vesicles fuse with the presynaptic membrane and release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft (exocytosis).
  4. Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic membrane.
  5. Binding of neurotransmitters opens ion channels in the postsynaptic membrane, allowing specific ions to enter or exit the postsynaptic neuron.
  6. Movement of ions generates a new potential in the postsynaptic neuron. This potential can be excitatory (promoting the generation of an action potential) or inhibitory (suppressing the generation of an action potential).

Answer:

(c) **Transmission of a nerve impulse across a chemical synapse:** At a chemical synapse, there is a small gap (synaptic cleft) between the presynaptic neuron (sending the signal) and the postsynaptic neuron (receiving the signal). When an electrical impulse (action potential) arrives at the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron, it causes the release of chemical substances called neurotransmitters from synaptic vesicles into the synaptic cleft. These neurotransmitters diffuse across the cleft and bind to specific receptor proteins on the membrane of the postsynaptic neuron. This binding opens ion channels on the postsynaptic membrane, leading to a change in the membrane potential (postsynaptic potential). If this potential reaches the threshold, it triggers the generation of a new action potential in the postsynaptic neuron, thus transmitting the impulse.



Central Neural System (CNS)

The **CNS** includes the **brain** and the **spinal cord**. It is the primary site for processing information, making decisions, and controlling body activities. The brain is well-protected by the skull and covered by cranial meninges (dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater). The spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column. The brain is divided into three major parts: forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.

The **brain stem** is a structure formed by the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata, connecting the forebrain to the spinal cord. It controls many basic involuntary functions necessary for survival.


Forebrain

The forebrain is the most complex and largest part of the human brain. It consists of:


Midbrain

Located between the thalamus/hypothalamus (forebrain) and pons (hindbrain). A canal (cerebral aqueduct) passes through it. Dorsal portion has four round swellings (lobes) called **corpora quadrigemina**, involved in processing visual and auditory information.


Hindbrain

Comprises the pons, cerebellum, and medulla (medulla oblongata).

The **brain stem** is formed by the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. It connects the brain (cerebrum and cerebellum) to the spinal cord and is essential for transferring information and controlling basic life functions.

(b) **Forebrain:** The largest and most complex part of the human brain, responsible for higher-level functions. It includes the **cerebrum** (involved in voluntary movement, sensory processing, learning, memory, language, reasoning), the **thalamus** (relays sensory and motor signals), and the **hypothalamus** (controls temperature, hunger, thirst, and regulates the pituitary gland). The limbic system, involved in emotions and motivation, is also part of the forebrain.

(c) **Midbrain:** A small central part of the brainstem, located between the forebrain and hindbrain. It contains centers involved in processing visual and auditory information (corpora quadrigemina) and plays a role in regulating movement and relaying information between different parts of the brain.

(d) **Hindbrain:** The posterior part of the brain, connected to the spinal cord. It consists of the **pons** (relays signals, involved in regulating breathing and sleep cycles), the **cerebellum** (coordinates voluntary movement, balance, posture, motor learning), and the **medulla oblongata** (controls vital involuntary functions like respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, swallowing, vomiting, digestion). The pons, medulla, and midbrain together form the brainstem.
